Paper Portals IV: The Holy Mountain and Egyptian Clit Coin Poster 2022
limited edition poster 12 X 17 inch with hand painted gold detail from recent show at Somerset house
inspired by the hermetic mystic, Hermes Trismegistus:
“As above, so below, as within, so without, as the universe, so the soul...”
The paper portal series dramatise the premise of the Axis Mundi and Anima Mundi. The ovals representing the sacred geometry of the Vesica Pisces, a conduit between the celestial and the terrestrial, they activate mythical journeys into different mystic traditions and cosmologies.
These detailed drawings were meditatively made with a 0.05 ink pen during Covid19. They represent initiatory journeys through fragmented, disembodied, altered states via stargates or portal points and they intend the viewer to see or feel a different way through in a time of stasis and entropy.
This drawing is a reworking of the engraving The Holy mountain of Initiation by Raphael Custodis 1616, it functions as an Vesica conjuring a journey to the underworld, the phoenix rises in triumph and the Egyptian arms hold a feather and a heart, weighing the deeds in life that will grant your fate in the otherworld
